Greenway Leadership Corps
The Greenway Foundation
2018 Innovative EE Program Award Recipient
The Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) is a youth program offering outdoor adventures, stewardship projects, and environmental career exploration for middle and high school aged students. Through monthly events, the GLC introduces youth to career opportunities in environmental fields and works to increase environmental literacy.
Started in 2014, the GLC has steadily grown to now serve over 120 teens each year. These youth are participating in volunteer service work, meeting with environmental professionals, learning about environmental degree programs, and trying new outdoor activities, such as snowboarding, river rafting, and camping. All of these activities are designed to provide teens with new experiences and perspectives, and to inspire a deeper connection with the environment.
The program is open to all Denver teens, but is targeted toward youth from underserved communities who may not otherwise have access to these activities or consider an environmental career. The Greenway Foundation works to increase the accessibility of GLC activities by providing any necessary transportation and outdoor gear, covering all activity fees, and requiring no previous experience. By reducing barriers and providing a broad spectrum of experiences, the GLC provides a pathway for Denver’s urban youth to become future environmental leaders.
