Chantel Estes

Chantel Estes teaches grades K-6 in her engineering elective. What is unique about this class is that Chantel has turned a traditional building class into an environmental education class where students focus on the Global Sustainability Goals for all of their projects. In additon to promoting environmental education in her classroom, Chantel also reaches out to other teachers in her shool to ensure that curriculum across the school at all grade levels incorporates environmental education and outdoor learning opportunities. Stepping into Roxborough Elementary allows visitors to see environmental initiatives present in every room, hallway and outdoor area. Posters related to the environment are in the halls, bird and bat boxes are installed in learning areas, recycling bins and energy savings are the norm. Chantel has truly created a culture of environmental education at her school and works to share her successes with other teachers through her leadership in the Sustainability Steering Committee where she supports and provides leadership. Chantel also reaches out to the community to ensure engagement at multiple levels and makes sure that the school follows Global Sustainability Goals in all facets of environmental education.
