Specifically, this position:

  • Exercises direct and indirect supervision over volunteers.
  • coordinates the volunteer program in collaboration with other department staff, and outside agencies, as appropriate.
  • Provides supervisory accountability for volunteers within that department which includes training and scheduling.
  • Supports other staff in supervision and best practices working with volunteers.
  • Ensures volunteers are adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Develops and implements strategies, objectives, policies, evaluations, and procedures for volunteers.
  • Organizes, develops, and implements educational lesson plans, interpretive signage, digital content, printed material, and other educational media in collaboration with staff.
  • Collaborates with Department staff to proactively promote community education offerings, develop and deliver stewardship messaging, and support public engagement initiatives.

We are looking for a candidate that will:
  • Use routine software and business application including, but not limited to, word processing, websites, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain website content and social media applications.
  • Effectively collaborate with a diverse set of staff and volunteers.
  • Meet deadline and use time, material, and resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Develop and deliver education programs.
  • Have knowledge of local plant and animal communities, ecological processes and leave no trace principles.
  • Have experience with volunteer management, including the ability to recruit, select, train, supervise, and maintain volunteers.
  • Know the strategies and designs of effective training and development programming.
  • Have effective public speaking skills 

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Three (3) years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties with at least one (1) year of experience in the supervision of staff and volunteers required.
  • Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent education, from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Environmental Education/Interpretation, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, or other closely related field required. Related education or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of date of hire.

Supplemental Information

The typical schedule for this position is Monday to Friday (during October through April) and Tuesday to Saturday (during May through September). Occasional weekend work may be required.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. A successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
