Youth Education Summer Rock Instructor
Position Qualifications:
American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor certification or equivalent (or higher cert)
Two or more years of significant rock climbing experience, including anchor building and institutional climbing instruction. Must be able to comfortably lead traditional climbs up to 5.8
Ability coach & supervise a wide range of personalities, abilities, and ages
Familiarity with other youth rock climbing programs, statewide and/or nationally
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Ability to lead and direct other staff and interns
Excellent communication skills and ability to mentor technical skills
Sense of humor, ability to relate to youth and adults of all ages and backgrounds
Current Wilderness First Responder certification
Current driver’s license. Must be able to pass drivers test and have no moving violations within the past year
Submit a criminal background check
Must be 21 years of age or older
Able to carry loads up to 45 pounds
Ability to provide personal transportation to and from the American Mountaineering Center in Golden each day
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Ability to instruct other adventure education and environmental education programs
Position Responsibilities:
Facilitate a safe, positive, cooperative, and fun group environment with youth ages 8-18
Set up and break down of technical rope systems at specified outdoor crags and at our indoor wall
Co-lead instructor on day and overnight programs; responsible for group management, safety and well-being of youth participants
Understand and follow all YEP risk management and safety procedures
Demonstrate and instruct safe climbing skills including belaying, rappelling, knot tying, back-up systems, artificial gear placement
Coach students in proper climbing skills and techniques
Inventory and maintain climbing equipment and program materials daily
Ensure safety of self while setting up and breaking down technical climbing systems and model this behavior
Instruct and coach students in climbing concepts including belaying, knot tying, rappelling, back-up systems, equipment use and technique
Assist with training and supervision of interns and other staff during climbing programs
Create daily instruction plans as needed and co-lead daily activities
Dates of Employment: May 31-August 6, 2021 (included 5 day training prior to summer camps)
Compensation & Perks: $110-130 a day depending on experience.
